How Sales Tax Is Calculated
Multiply your purchase amount by the state tax rate. A $200 purchase in California (7.25%) results in $14.50 in state sales tax, bringing the total to $214.50 — before any local additions.
States With No Sales Tax
Five states charge no statewide sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon. However, Alaska allows local jurisdictions to levy their own taxes — so "no state tax" doesn't always mean zero tax at the register.
Local Taxes on Top
Most states allow cities and counties to add local sales taxes on top of the state base rate. New York City, for example, adds a combined local rate that brings the total to 8.875%. Always check local rates for exact quotes.
When Businesses Must Collect Tax
If you have nexus — a significant presence — in a state, you're generally required to collect and remit sales tax for sales into that state. Since South Dakota v. Wayfair (2018), nexus can be established by sales volume alone, even without a physical presence.
Sales tax tips for small business owners
- Register in every state where you have nexus. Selling above a threshold (often $100,000 or 200 transactions per year) in a state creates economic nexus and requires you to collect and remit their sales tax.
- Not all products are taxable. Many states exempt groceries, prescription drugs, and clothing from sales tax. Know your product category before assuming you need to collect.
- Use this calculator for estimates, not for compliance. Actual tax due includes local rates and may vary by product type. Use this as a planning tool and consult your accountant for tax filings.
- Sales tax is not your money. Tax collected from customers belongs to the state. Track it separately and remit on schedule to avoid penalties and interest.
- Automate if you sell in multiple states. Services like TaxJar or Avalara automatically calculate, collect, and file sales tax across states — essential if you're selling online at scale.
